Youth slits girl's throat

Staff Reporter

Attempts suicide fearing wrath of neighbours

ANANTAPUR: A youth having blind faith in gaining supernatural powers by offering sacrifice allegedly slit the throat of a tenth class girl at Dharmavaram in the district on Wednesday.

He attempted suicide by slitting his throat fearing the wrath of neighbours, who gathered in large numbers immediately after he attacked the girl. Both collapsed on the spot and were rushed to hospital.

According to police, Naveen (25) living in Geeta Nagar was told by a `Swamy' that he would gain supernatural powers either by marrying or sacrificing a teenaged girl with specified qualities. The youth had `found' the required qualities in a tenth-class girl Parveen (14).

After deciding to marry her, he contacted the girl's parents a week ago and they had turned down his proposal. Resigning himself to the fact that marrying her was impossible, he allegedly decided to sacrifice her and accordingly attacked her with a blade, when she was on way to school in the morning.

The girl was admitted to the Government hospital there. The youth was moved to the General Hospital here. The police were on the look out for the `nimmakayala swamy' who had misguided him about the sacrifice. The girl's father lodged a complaint with the police.
