No cakewalk for TRS-Congress nominee in Navipet ZPTC

P. Ram Mohan

TDP candidate promises to give fight

NAVIPET (NIZAMABAD. Dt.): In Navipet ZP Territorial Constituency it may not be a cake walk for R. Ramkishan Rao, who was jointly fielded by Telangana Rashtra Samiti and Congress, as the Telugu Desam nominee, V. Mohan Reddy, is giving a tough fight.

In the multi-cornered contest, Ramkishan Rao, a close relative of the TRS chief and Union Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao is largely depending on the popularity of ruling party and Telangana sentiment, which has always been on low ebb in the constituency, besides his own influence.

Prestigious contest

Both the candidates are considering it very prestigious as the TDP nominee is being tipped as the candidate for ZP chairman's post from his party and the TRS nominee is likely to stake his claim for at least the vice-chairman's post if not the chairman in the Congress-TRS alliance politics, if any one of them wins election and his party secures majority.

Probably, this is the only constituency where the TRS and Congress have forged an alliance as the latter is wholly supporting its ally. In all other ZPTCs the Congress fielded its nominees at the cost of the alliance. Therefore, leaders of Congress and TRS have been making concerted efforts to win the constituency.

Not new to politics

Mr Ramkishan Rao, a close follower of Dichpally MLA G. Ganga Reddy, is not new to politics. He has served as sarpanch of his village, Pothangal in the mandal for some 25 years. However, it is certain that his success will largely depend on what extent the Congress extends its support.

Mohan Reddy, the former chairman of the Nizam Cooperative Sugar Factory though stays at Nizamabad has good relations with the farming community. Initially, he seemed to be lagging behind in the campaign, but gradually picked up. With both the candidates being financially sound they are leaving no stone unturned to win the election.

The TDP supporters are of the view that price hike, declining popularity of TRS and Congress failures in the distribution of ration cards and the continuous power supply for seven hours will work in their favour.

Here, the BJP is also a force to reckon with, because besides its own strength it has fielded a Lamabada, Vasanta Rao. The Lambadas have a vote bank of 4,800 in the constituency and are in a position to tilt the balance.
