Bank staff to go on strike

MUMBAI: Canara Bank Staff Union has decided to observe a day's strike on Thursday throughout the country to press their demands.

The Union stated that "the Bank has expended during the Centenary Year (from June 30, 2005 till date) Rs. 100 crore towards celebrations, the employees aspirations and demands were ignored." The demands included, interest on Provident Funds of the employees to be paid at 9.5 per cent per annum as against 7.5 per cent per annum paid by the Bank for the accounting year ending March 31, 2006.
