`Corporation has failed to check unscrupulous elements'

Special Correspondent

Mayor's move against eviction is an injustice to us: merchants

MANGALORE: The Central Market Merchants Association here has alleged that the failure of the Mangalore City Corporation to check unscrupulous elements in and around the market has obstructed business.

Business on roads

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, association general secretary Hamid Kandak said the corporation was allowing petty shop owners, pushcart vendors and others to do business on roads around the market.

Lower rates

They sold their goods at lower rates as they did not have to pay rent, fee or cess to the corporation, while the merchants were burdened with these.

Mr. Kandak said Mayor K. Ashraf, who had stopped the corporation from evicting petty shop owners, pushcart vendors and other unlicensed operators had done injustice to the merchants.

The association had sent a representation to the Government in this connection, he added.

Mr. Kandak said the corporation was not taking up maintenance at the market complex regularly.

The association had appealed to the corporation to allow these vendors to operate from the enclosure in the market.

He said the corporation had failed to ensure cleanliness at the toilets in the market complex. During the rainy season, the storm water drain got clogged and overflowed.
