MANGALORE: The District Consultative Committee and District-level Review Committee for Banking Development in Dakshina Kannada, which met here on Wednesday, has rejected a proposal to implement the Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) through non-governmental organisations. The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) under the zilla panchayat will continue to implement it. Mooting the proposal, A.M. Kunjappa, chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat, said there was thinking to involve Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) in the implementation of the scheme. SKDRDP was implementing a "special SGSY" with an outlay of Rs. 14.56 crore, he said. Stating that he had discussed the issue with principal secretary, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Mr. Kunjappa said the intention in handing over its implementation to a non-governmental organisation was to avoid duplication in extending benefits to beneficiaries. K. Praveenraj Udupa, Assistant General Manager, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, said there should be scope for other non-governmental organisations to implement the SGSY. A. Gopal, Lead District Manager of Syndicate Bank, and Augustine, Assistant General Manager, Reserve Bank of India, spoke.
