Official visits areas prone to erosion

Meeting to be convened to find solution to the problem

    MANGALORE: Deputy Commissioner Maheshwara Rao, who visited areas prone to sea erosion in and around Ullal on Tuesday, promised members of the Ullal Town Panchayat that he would keep the Government informed about the latest development.

    This was Mr. Maheshwara Rao's first visit to Ullal after he took charge as Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada on Monday.

    The panchayat members and president had urged the Deputy Commissioner to visit the areas on the day he assumed charge.

    Alfred D'Souza, chairman of the standing committee of the panchayat, said Mr. Maheshwara Rao consulted senior revenue officers to know about the problem.

    Accompanied by senior police and revenue officials, Mr. Maheshwara Rao visited several places in and around Ullal.

    Dinakar Ullal, panchayat president, and other senior citizens explained the problem to Mr. Maheshwara Rao and urged him to take steps for the construction of mini breakwaters in the area.

    Mr. Maheshwara Rao told the members that he would convene a meeting of officials concerned and try to come up with a solution to the problem.

    The authorities of the Department of Ports reportedly told the Deputy Commissioner that the Government had not released any funds to tackle the problem, Mr. D'Souza said in a press release.

    The elected representatives of the panchayat appreciated the officers for visiting the affected areas despite adverse sea conditions.

    Rainfall

    There was no letup in rainfall in the district in the last 24 hours up to 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

    Puttur received the highest rainfall of 91 mm and Bajpe Airport the lowest rainfall of 21.6 mm.

    Rainfall recorded in other places in the district is Sullia and Belthangady 53.2 mm respectively, Uppinangady 45.2 mm, Bantwal 28 mm and Mangalore 22 mm.
