HYDERABAD: The police gunned down a person here at Hayathnagar when he allegedly tried to escape from their custody while being brought from Gannavaram to Hyderabad in connection with a kidnap case on Wednesday. The police said M. Kameswara Rao, 27, was accused of involvement in several criminal cases, including the recent abduction of a realtor's son from L.B. Nagar for Rs. 50-lakh ransom. A special team of the Cyberabad police probing the case traced him at Gannavaram near Vijayawada and rounded him up while he was travelling in a car carrying Rs. 30 lakhs on Tuesday. After seizing the cash and a country-made pistol from him, the police team was returning to Hyderabad. When they reached Batasingaram bridge on city outskirts around 6 a.m. Rao requested the police to allow him to answer a nature's call. Saroornagar division Officer on Special Duty K. Jagan Mohan Reddy claimed that while other policemen sat in the vehicle, a constable Sriramulu escorted Rao to roadside holding the chain linked to the handcuffs. "Rao suddenly snatched the constable's pistol and started running even as the policeman chased him asking him to surrender," Mr. Reddy maintained. Alerted by the shouts, other team members ran after him even as he fired shots at the police. Chasing him for over half-a-kilometre, policemen shot eight rounds at him. "Later, they found him dead" the OSD said.
