MCD blacklists 18 NGOs

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday blacklisted 18 non-government organisations (NGOs) after they were found guilty of taking grants from the civic body through fraudulent means, misusing public money or not working properly.

Delhi Mayor Farhad Suri said following complaints against various NGOs, Municipal Commissioner A. K. Nigam had ordered scrutiny of accounts and works of 356 of them that were given grants worth Rs.5 crores last year. "Of these, 18 were found guilty and have now been blacklisted. We have cleared the names of 293 NGOs for granting funds this year, while inquiries against 45 others are still on," said Mr. Suri.

The Mayor said the list of blacklisted NGOs would be forwarded to the Centre, Delhi Government and New Delhi Municipal Council to check the unscrupulous activities of these organisations in the Capital.

LIC to come out

with new schemes

NEW DELHI: Stating that it would soon come out with new schemes and Information Technology-enabled services, Life Insurance Corporation of India Chairman T. S. Vijayan has exhorted the LIC employees to set new benchmarks in customer servicing to make it a world-class organisation.

Inaugurating the new modernised Delhi Divisional Office-II building at Scope Minar in Laxmi Nagar here on Tuesday, Mr. Vijayan said: "LIC can call itself a world-class organisation only if it becomes the first choice of customers.''

The LIC paid up over Rs. 605 crores as claims to policyholders last year.

Robbery plan foiled, five held

NEW DELHI: Five young men have been arrested by the New Usmanpur police on charges of planning to commit a robbery. The police claim to have recovered a country-made firearm, live cartridges and knives from their possession.

During interrogation, they allegedly disclosed that they had assembled to plan a robbery on Tuesday. The police have identified the accused as Abid, Deepak, Wasik, Jeetu and Shabaj. Efforts are on to identify and arrest their other accomplices.

Five questioned in murder case

NEW DELHI: The police have questioned a few people in connection with the gruesome murder of shopkeeper Sundarlal Jain at Chandni Chowk here on Sunday.

Fifty-year-old Mr. Jain was found stabbed to death in his shop by the area security guard.

His body bore several stab wounds.

The police have questioned his relatives and his employees to find out if any valuables were missing from the shop. The area security guards have also been questioned.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi) Sunil Garg said on Wednesday that all possible angles were being investigated.

Woman drug peddler arrested

NEW DELHI: Police have arrested a woman drug peddler from South Delhi and recovered 10 grams of smack from her.

Phoolam Devi was arrested from near Andheria Mod in Mehrauli on Tuesday evening.
