This Day That Age
Mr. C.D. Deshmukh, Union Finance Minister, inaugurating the Kundah Project work at Ootacamund on June 29, said: "If there is one thing on which the fortunes of Madras State depend more than on anything else, it is the provision of electricity both for rural areas and for small-scale and larger industries. In this development, the State can well be proud of the Kundah Project." He expressed confidence that it would be completed within the scheduled time and within the estimates. Referring to the Canadian aid for the project, Mr. Deshmukh said it was a massive contribution for the execution of the project and proceeded from that nation's abundance of goodwill and genuine desire to help and it was worthy of the highest praise and gratitude. In spite of the opinions expressed to the contrary, Mr. Deshmukh said he remained an incorrigible adherent to the theory that there was nothing wrong in accepting aid proffered by friendly foreign nations without any strings attached. After referring to the important part played by the labour in such a project, he stressed the need to instil in the minds of workmen a feeling of oneness with the project by educating them and by providing necessary amenities for them.
