Upgrading the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (MCH) to the status of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been a major demand of a section of the people in Kozhikode. Press conferences, sit-ins, protest marches, seminars, resolutions of Kozhikode Corporation Council were the order of the day ever since the Centre announced that one of the medical colleges in the State would be conferred AIIMS status. Unfortunately, very few are concerned about the current state of affairs at the hospital. During rainy season, patients are having a harrowing experience in even getting an Out Patient (O.P) ticket. The fibre sheet of the shed of the O.P. ticket counter has developed leaks. Many of them the patients have to stand in the queue with their umbrellas. Leakage problem does not end with the O.P. ticket counter. Visitors encounter the problem at special- pass -counter of the hospital. And to think of, agitations for AIIMS continued even after Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan declared in Kozhikode that the AIIMS status would be bestowed to the medical college in the State capital. Now demands are being raised to confer the proposed medical university status to the Kozhikode MCH.
