Shop owners in Mahe, a nine sq. km. Union Territory area sandwiched between Kannur and Kozhikode districts, do not conceal their upbeat mood. The proposals in the Left Democratic Front Government's Budget hardly give them any room for being less happy. The Budget proposal to hike the tax levied on items such as fridges, washing machines, and TV sets from the existing 12.5 per cent to 20 per cent little deters the shop owners selling those in Mahe from being upbeat. This is because tax on these items remains 12.5 per cent in Mahe. Equally happy, due to this disparity, are those selling glass, hardware, electric, electronic and ceramic products. Liquor, petrol and diesel are already cheaper in this tiny outlying territory of Pondicherry, which has nearly 68 liquor outlets and one-and-a-half dozen petrol bunks. The cheerful mood of merchants in Mahe is in sharp contrast to what had happened following previous budgets presented by then Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman who sought to restrain them by introducing entry tax and tax uniformity.
