KOZHIKODE: On June 25, old students of the Zamorin Guruvayurappan College in Kozhikode congregated on the college campus for a monsoon get-together `Vriksha dinam.' The programme is held annually as part of the ambitious `Oushadaranyam' initiative chalked out by the `Zamorin's Guruvayurappan College Old Students Association' for planting medicinal plants and trees, on the college campus. The ambition is to turn the entire campus into a dream herbal garden with select varieties of plant species. According to the president of the Old Students' Association, Prof. T. Shobeendran, the objective of the `Oushadaranyam' project is to turn the 100-acre campus into a herbarium. The efforts have been on since the last few years, and steps are being taken to ensure that in future too the association will continue the project. "The guidelines are being so formulated that in future too there will be continuity in the programmes taken up. What is initiated now is a three-year programme. But it will continue as a long-term programme. Side by side a full-fledged rain-water harvesting scheme is being set up with the technical help of the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management," Prof. Shobeendran said. The association has also resolved to observe `old students day' in a concerted manner. As many as 1000 old students had participated in the `old students' day' held in January. Sugathakumari, poet had inaugurated the programme. Old students M.P. Veerendra Kumar MP, former minister A. Sujanapal among others had participated. Nine old students, who had made their mark in their respective avocations, were honoured on the occasion. A grand old students' meet is being planned in 2007, as part of the 130th anniversary of the college. Old students who are abroad besides those in the country are being contacted. Schemes that would benefit the college would be taken up with the assistance of the members. Chapters of the association have been set up at Bangalore and Dubai. A website is also being set up.
