Reorient training, Hu tells army

BEIJING: Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), Hu Jintao, on Tuesday said military training in peacetime was of great importance.

The army should work hard in training its personnel, in an effort to adapt itself to the changing situations and new methods of warfare, Mr. Hu said. ``Step up military training to strengthen the army and be rigorous in carrying out military training,'' he stressed. Mr. Hu was delivering the keynote address at the military training conference of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The army, whose mainstay has been mechanical arms and equipment in the past, should reorient its training methods to face the challenges of the information age, said China's top leader. China's security situation has witnessed profound changes and the army is carrying out a new mission, so that it should intensify the efforts in training, with a strategic awareness about the general situation.

He urged the armed forces to bring into full play the role of science and technology and carry out reforms and innovations, so as to set up a scientific system for training in the new circumstances.

All service personnel should be made aware of the army's historic mission, ideology and socialist ethics, while upholding the Marxist view of war, the leader said. — Xinhua
