Kolkata is the fist choice of the company in this regard

  • Dharwad MP had written to Tata regarding urging him to set up the unit in Dharwad
  • Tata Motors has set up a plant in Dharwad to manufacture earth-moving equipment

HUBLI: Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Motors, has said that the company is following a multi-location manufacturing strategy for its proposed unit to manufacture small cars.

Replying to a letter from Pralhad Joshi, Dharwad north MP, Mr. Tata had clarified that Kolkata was the fist choice of the company in this regard and it was in the process of evaluating other locations for setting up manufacturing plants.

Mr. Joshi had written to Mr. Tata urging him not to shift the proposed small car-manufacturing unit from Dharwad to Kolkata. In his letter he mentioned the commitment of the coalition Government in the State to providing adequate facilities and incentives for companies wishing to establish their units in the north Karnataka region.

Mr. Tata said the company had established a plant in Dharwad to manufacture earth-moving equipment. "The company will consider assembling special purpose vehicles in Dharwad if the market size justifies such an independent facility."

    Delegation

Mr. Joshi had written to the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister emphasising the need to take a high-level delegation led by the Minister for Industries and comprising Ministers and elected representatives of north Karnataka to appeal to Mr. Tata to give priority to Dharwad for setting up the company's proposed small car-manufacturing unit. Mr. Joshi said that he would meet Mr. Tata to discuss this issue and urge him to set up the assembling unit of special purpose vehicles at the earliest.
