TO THE BRIM: People walking on the bund of the overflowing Unakal Lake in Hubli on Thursday. Copious rains in the past few days have increased the inflow into the lake.
HUBLI: In the wake of copious rain this year, the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has made elaborate arrangements in flood-prone areas. P. Manivannan, Commissioner of HDMC, has said in a release here on Thursday that the corporation was prepared to cope with an emergency situation arising from the downpour. He said storm water drains in the city were not equipped to carry the extra water in case of a sudden downpour. Owing to paucity of funds, work on storm water drains were yet to be taken up, he added. The corporation had made preparations for rehabilitation of people living in low-lying areas. It would identify houses that were likely to be affected by floods and the residents would be issued "special letters" warning them to shift their dwellings at the earliest. The letter would authorise them to move into certain kalyana mantapas in the area. These letters would have the Public Distribution System card number and would display how many persons needed temporary rehabilitation. The residents can produce the letter at the kalyana mantapas indicated and could avail basic amenities, the Commissioner said. While the Heggeri Kalyana Mantap, Indira Nagar Kalyana Mantap and Samudaya Bhavan in Lingarajnagar have been identified for this purpose in Hubli, people living in low-lying areas in Dharwad can take shelter at the Bharati Nagar Kalyana Mantapa, Shringar Kalyana Mantapa and Murghat Math Kalyana Mantapa. The Chief Zonal Officer of the respective wards would issue the special letters, he added.
