University results: students worried over marks discrepancy

Special Correspondent

Difference between Internet results and mark-list causes concern

VELLORE: The discrepancy noticed by the under-graduate students of the colleges affiliated to Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore between the marks found on the Internet in respect of the Part-II English public examinations (code-named LEC) and the marks found in the mark list sent to the colleges has caused great concern. When the university final year examinations of B.A. English Literature results and some other under-graduate courses were put on the website of the varsity on June 20, the teachers valuing the papers were shocked, since the results were on the website even when the valuation of the part-II English papers and Branch XII English Literature papers was in progress in four centres here.

In a memorandum addressed to the Minister for Higher Education, K. Ponmudi, a syndicate member, Ms. Sakunthala had stated that while the valuation of Part II English Paper II (LEC) and Branch XII English Language and Literature papers was in progress on June 20, the results of the third year students were published in the university website, www.tvuni.org, before 8 a.m. the same day. Only after she complained to the Registrar-in-charge, the results were withdrawn from the website at 2.30 p.m. The syndicate member pointed out that the examination results should be published only after the Board of Examiners met and submitted its final recommendations to the Controller of Examinations. She demanded an impartial enquiry into the incident. When the teachers and students were still to recover from the shock of the earlier "publication" of the results on the website, they were in for a greater shock when they found on Monday that the marks as per the list sent to the colleges varied with that on the website. C. Sabapathy, a B.A. Tamil student of Voorhees College (registration no.2422754) said that while he had got 30 per cent marks in LEC, his score was three per cent as per the mark-list sent to the colleges. Similarly, the LEC marks of A. Saravanan (reg.no.2422755) were 41per cent in the website and 8 per cent in the college mark-list.

C. Gnanasekharan, Vellore MLA and G. Latha, Gudiyatham MLA have in memoranda sent to the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi and the Higher Education Minister, K. Ponmudi requested them to constitute a committee of senior professors to enquire into the above "irregularities".
