Rotary Clubs help the unemployed secure jobs

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Members of 95 Rotary clubs under Rotary district 3230 trained and assisted 4,500 candidates, and helped 3,897 individuals secure jobs in a year ending June 30.

It is estimated that Rotarians in their capacity as employers directly recruited more than 2,000 candidates in over 60 vocations, ranging from tailoring, nursing, plumbing and driving to garment checking, food products manufacturing, billing, digital photography, housekeeping, security maintenance, CNC machine operations, petrol pump attending and manufacturing of cups and plates, says Sudha Umashanker, District Chairman, Vocational Service.

"Our thrust area for 2005-`06 was job generation and job creation. While the cream of students finds the best or at least good jobs, a large number of second rung students and dropouts are left behind. A sizeable section of women in society are looking for productive employment," she notes.

District Governor R. Shyamsundar said youths could be kept away from antisocial activities if they were productively employed.

Projects such as the `One Rotarian One Job' project are of immense help to the community, he added.
