They demand release of well-behaved prisoners in Gulbarga

Gulbarga: Members of Kannada Sainya tried to lay siege to the district jail in Gulbarga on Thursday demanding that well-behaved prisoners be released immediately. Protestors blocked the Bidar-Srirangapattana State Highway in front of the jail for nearly two hours in the morning.

This caused hardship to people as vehicles were held up on the road for over a kilometre on either side. Police cordoned off the prison main gate. They demanded that the Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pande come to the spot and receive the memorandum. Finally, they agreed to submit the memorandum to the Tahsildar who reached there.

Their demands included better amenities, nutritious food and medicine to prisoners across the State, creating healthy and hygienic environment inside prisons, setting up vocational skill training centres in each district prison, setting up literacy centres in all prisons and conducting meditation sessions in prisons.

They demanded that the State Government observe year of the Suvarna Karnataka meaningfully by releasing all well-behaved prisoners serving long terms.

The Government should investigate all charges of corruption by prison officials, they demanded. Leaders Somnath L Kattimani, Vijay Kumar Patil and S.S. Shamsundar led the agitation.
