Constable ends fast

CHITRADURGA: A police constable was forced to end his three-day fast during duty hours inside the police station at Srirampura, about 80 km from here, following his superiors threatened to file a case of attempted suicide against him. Sources said Babu Reddy went on fast as his repeated appeals seeking cancellation of his recent transfer from the Chitradurga police station to Srirampura fell on deaf ears. The Srirampura Sub-Inspector brought this to the notice of his superiors, who directed him to book a case of attempted suicide against the constable if he did not drop his agitation. — UNI

Rally planned

DAVANGERE: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) city unit has decided to welcome Sugar Minister S.A. Ravindranath on July 2 with a motorcycle rally. BJP district unit president L. Basavaraj told presspersons here on Thursday that a function had been organised to welcome the Minister at the Ranga Mandira and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Two arrested

DAVANGERE: The Davangere police have arrested two persons allegedly involved in lifting two-wheelers. The police have recovered nine two-wheelers from the arrested. The names of the arrested were given as Thippesway from Holalkere and Arogyanath from Chikkajajur. — Staff Correspondent

Protest

Gulbarga: Members of the Akhila Bharata Yuva Jana Federation staged a protest in Gulbarga on Thursday, demanding the Government appoint only youth trained in teaching nursery children as anganawadi workers. They marched through the main streets of the city. They shouted slogans against the Government for appointing women without any qualification as anganawadi workers. The submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare before dispersing. — Staff Correspondent

New Vice-Chancellor for Gulbarga University

BANGALORE: B.G. Mulimani, professor of Physics in Karnatak University, is the new Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University. Governor T.N. Chaturvedi made the appointment on Thursday. Prof. Mulimani's name had been recommended by the Government. The term of the last Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, V.B. Coutinho, ended on February 17. Pratap Singh Tiwari, Dean of the Faculty of Education in the university, was acting Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Mulimani was selected from a panel of names recommended by a search committee. — Special Correspondent

Seats for sports quota candidates

Bangalore: The Common Entrance Test Cell on Thursday held the document verification for sports category candidates. As many as 266 candidates appeared, and 197 were found eligible for seats reserved under the sports quota. The seat selection process for eligible sports-category candidates will be held on Friday, according to the schedule notified in the CET 2006 brochure. Two medical seats, 20 engineering seats, three Ayurveda seats, one seat each in homoeopathy, unani, and naturopathy and yoga courses will be offered for selection. — Special Correspondent

Basavarajaiah,new SIT principal

TUMKUR: The Siddaganga Education Society has appointed Basavarajaiah as principal of the Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur. The post fell vacant with the retirement of M.N. Shops burgled in Kunigal

TUMKUR: Burglars broke into at least 10 shops and a few other establishments in Kunigal in Tumkur district on Wednesday night and took away cash and goods. The shops burgled are located on National Highway 48 and the main street in Kote area. — Staff Correspondent

BANGALORE: The National Institute of Design's R&D Campus, Bangalore, will conduct a workshop on "Human behaviour and user experience as tools for developing creative concepts in retail design", from July 18 to July 22. The workshop will cover various aspects of store design. — Staff Reporter

Police told to stop sale of fake fertilizer

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy acted on a complaint by Congress member B.A. Jivijaya in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday and ordered the police in Kodagu, Hassan, Chikmagalur, Shimoga and Chitradurga districts to take action against those selling spurious fertilizers.

Mr. Jivijaya exhibited two plastic containing fake and genuine fertilizer in the House. Speaker Krishna allowed him to demonstrate in his chambers the difference between the two in the presence of Mr. Kumaraswamy, Agriculture Minister Bandeppa Kashempur and presspersons. While the genuine fertilizer dissolved in water, the fake one proved to be clay mixed with gypsum.

Mr. Jivijaya alleged 15 tonnes of fake fertilizers had been sold in Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu district. — Staff Reporter

23,000 Devadasis identified, rehabilitated

BANGALORE: The Government has identified and rehabilitated 23,000 Devadasis in the State and is considering paying them a monthly stipend, Minister for Women and Child Welfare H.K. Kumaraswamy told the Legislative Council on Thursday.

Replying to Mallajamma (Congress), the Minister said the Government was thinking of paying a stipend of Rs. 500 to Devadasis.

Referring to programmes for the empowerment of women, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that as suggested by members there was an urgent need to create markets for the goods produced by women at the taluk and hobli levels.

There were one lakh Stree Shakti groups in the State. The Government had allocated Rs. 31 lakh for the activities of these groups, he added. — Staff Reporter

Move for tribunal on Mahadayi opposed

BANGALORE: Basavaraj Bommai, MLC, has opposed the move of Union Minister for Water Resources Saifuddin Soz to constitute a tribunal to apportion the waters of the Mahadayi between Karnataka and Goa.

In a letter to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Mr. Bommai has urged the Government to begin work on the Kalasa and Banduri nala diversion projects after obtaining in-principle approval from the Centre.

The letter says that Mr. Soz had written to him that the Central Water Commission would convene a meeting of officials of Goa and Karnataka. "After receipt of the report of the meeting, I shall take a final decision on the constitution of a tribunal on the Mahadayi issue," Mr. Soz's letter said. — Special Correspondent

UNESCO representative meets Minister

BANGALORE: Minja Yang, representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on Thursday called on Minister for Tourism and Textiles B. Sriramulu and discussed steps taken by the Government to conserve heritage monuments at Hampi.

Mr. Sriramulu informed Ms. Yang that the Tourism Department was adhering to the instructions of UNESCO and had taken steps to develop infrastructure at Hampi for the benefit of tourists. A meeting of officials of the Tourism, Archaeology and Muzrai departments would be held shortly to discuss the implementation of development works, he said. — Special Correspondent

AWAKE conference on July 17, 18

Bangalore: AWAKE (Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Karnataka) will hold the fourth State-level conference for women on July 17 and 18 at the Bunt Sangha, Vijayanagar, Bangalore. The theme is `Introspection, interaction and innovation.'

A two-day exhibition and sale of products manufactured by women entrepreneurs will be held on the occasion.

DHARWAD: R.I. `Give Marathi official language status'

PANAJI: Goa may witness a revival of the bitter language controversy following the demand for full-fledged official status to Marathi by the Gomantak Marathi Academy, a literary body of the Marathi protagonists in the State. At present, Konkani is the official language of Goa and Marathi is used for official purposes. The Marathi protagonists have been demanding official language status on par with Konkani. The demand was made at the working committee meeting of the academy held on Thursday, said its president Gurudas Sawal. — Special Correspondent

Award conferred

DHARWAD: Linguist Sangamesh Saundattimath of Dharwad was conferred the "Sediyapu Krishna Bhat Memorial Award" by the Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Research Institute, Udupi, at a function held in Shimoga recently. Dr. Saundattimath is a recipient of Karnataka State Folklore Academy Award, the Dr. M. Chidananda Murthy Award and the Dr. Sham. Ba. Joshi Award. He has to his credit the discovery of two Dravidian dialects, Korcha and Yelava spoken in Bellary and Gulbarga districts, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

Pourakarmikas threaten agitation

MYSORE: Members of the Karnataka State Corporation and Town Municipality Pourakarmikara Maha Sangha have threatened to launch an agitation and abstain from work if the Government "fails" to meet their demand by July 5. In a press release issued here on Thursday, the members said their appeals to the Government to resolve their grievances had been ignored. Their demands included regularisation of their services, emoluments and amenities on par with other government staff, hike in death compensation from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 60,000, and regularisation of 51 pourakarmikas immediately. — Special Correspondent
