Puthiya Thamizhagam cadre arrested

TIRUNELVELI: The Tirunelveli Junction police have arrested a Puthiya Thamizhagam cadre and the hunt is on to nab six more persons for burning the copies of a Tamil weekly magazine.

The police said a group of PT and Bahujan Samaj Party cadres assembled in front of Ambedkar statue at Tirunelveli Junction and burnt the copies of the weekly magazine, which led to the arrest of Hariram.

The police are looking for Ramachandran of Bahujan Samaj Party, Mariappan of PT and four others.

New procedure in registration

TIRUNELVELI: Affixing of passport size photographs and fingerprints of sellers and buyers have been made compulsory in respect of sale documents as per the Central Act 48 of 2001.

A statement said that in respect of other documents also such as mortgage, exchange, settlement, gift, lease, release, partition, power of attorney etc., affixing of passport size photographs and fingerprints have been made compulsory.

In respect of registration offices, which have not yet been computerised, a separate passport size photograph in addition to the photograph affixed in the document shall be presented along with the document for preservation in the office.

This procedure will come into effect in the State from July 1.

House burgled

Tuticorin: Some unidentified persons burgled a house at Maniyahci on Wednesday and decamped with seven sovereigns of jewels.

The burglars entered the house by breaking the lock on the front door and took away the jewels kept inside a bureau.

The police are investigating the case based on a complaint lodged by Anotny Raj (36).

New bus service

PUDUKOTTAI: The Union Minister of State for Home S. Regupathy on Thursday inaugurated a new bus route from Pudukottai to Peravurani at a function held at Kulamangalam in the district. The new bus service would be operated via Vallathirakottai, Vengidakulam, Maramadakki, Keeramangalam and Paingal.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the ruling DMK Government was gradually implementing the promises, which it had made before the elections. The Alangudi MLA S. Rajasekaran and others participated.

Rake flagged off

TIRUCHI: The 23rd rake containing 45 container flat wagons, meant for the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), was flagged off from the Goldenrock railway workshop here by the Chief Workshop Engineer, Southern Railway, R. P. Misra on Thursday.

The Chief Workshop Manager, Goldenrock Workshop, S. Rangarajan and other officers and staff were present on the occasion. A press release from the workshop issued here said the workshop was in receipt of another order of Rs. 270 crore for the manufacture of 1,125 wagons for the CONCOR.

Medical camp

ARANTHANGI: More than 150 school students were screened for various health disorders at a medical camp conducted jointly by the Junior Chamber India Aranthagi Central and the Bridge of Hope Trust in Nagudi village near here recently. The secretary of the Aranthangi branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), J Ibrahim Shah, screened the students on the occasion. Medicines were distributed free of cost to the needy students along with tooth paste and brush. The president of the JCI Aranthangi Central, G. Gopalakrishnan inaugurated the camp.

Bank staff stage demonstration

Thanjavur: Members of Thanjavur unit of Canara Bank Staff Union staged a demonstration in front of Canara Bank, Arulananda Nagar branch here in support of their demands on Thursday. Their demands included increasing Provident Fund rate, absorption of graduate sub-staff as clerks etc.

Welfare aid given

ARIYALUR: The District Collector, Anil Meshram, distributed welfare assistance to the tune of Rs. 7.80 lakh to 86 persons belonging to the weaker sections at the mass contact programme held at Arungal village nere here on Wednesday.

The Collector after hearing the grievances of the people assured to take steps for the setting up of a veterinary dispensary in the village and also upgrade the local middle school into high school.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 104.13 feet Thursday.

Youth arrested

ERODE: Chitode police on Thursday arrested a youth in connection with a theft. According to the police, 35 sovereigns of gold jewellery were stolen from the house of Jagana of Kalingarayanpalayam,

Erode, some days ago. The police arrested her brother Usain Abdul Rahman and recovered the stolen jewellery from the same house. The police said Rahman had stolen it to settle his loan. - Staff Reporter

Hospice for terminally ill

SALEM: The Sharon Cancer Centre and General Hospital has built a hospice to provide pain and palliative treatment for the terminally ill patients. According to a release, Sharon Hospice will start functioning from July 1. Patients with any advanced illness will be considered for admission. The unit will have trained doctors and nurses on 24-hour duty. Treatment, medicines and food will be provided at minimum cost. The aim was to provide total care to patients who were not responsive to curative treatment. - Staff Reporter

New building for jaggery market

ERODE: Kavindapady jaggery market run by the Erode District Regulated Market Committee will have its own building soon. The new building is nearing completion and it would cost Rs 1.01 crore. Collector D. Karthikeyan said a land for the office building for the Regulated Market Committee has been sanctioned in the Vadamugam Vellode village on the Government Porabmoke land. It would be built at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh. In addition to this, five drying yards have been formed in five regulated markets in the district at a total cost of Rs. 10 lakh. - Staff Reporter

SALEM: The Salem Corporation officials had removed the encroachments on the New Integrated Bus Stand here on Thursday. Following widespread complaints, the civic administration had taken steps to evict the encroachers. - Staff Reporter

Free textbooks for Tamil medium students

CHENNAI: The State Government has ordered supply of free textbooks for all students in classes one to twelve in unaided government-approved schools, offering Tamil instruction under the State board syllabus.

A total of 1,28,514 students will benefit from the scheme which will cost the Government Rs. 94, 80,568, a press release here said. — Special Correspondent

Insurance Ombudsman

CHENNAI: K. Sridhar on Thursday took charge as Insurance Ombudsman, Chennai, with jurisdiction over Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

Mr. Sridhar retired as Managing Director, LIC of India recently. He has also held the position of Chief Vigilance Officer of General Insurance Corporation of India and New India Assurance Company, according an official release. — Special Correspondent

Rs. 10 lakh to legal heirs of Kuzhandai

CHENNAI: State Government has purchased the copyright of works of the poet Kuzhandai.

As sequel to this, the Government has decided to pay Rs. 10 lakh to the legal heirs of the poet, according to an official release issued here on Thursday.

Born in July 1906 in what is now called Erode district, Kuzhandai had written 29 books. He joined the Self-Respect Movement and contributed to propagation of rationalist thought. "Ravana Kaviyam" and commentaries on Tirukkural and Tolkappiam were among his works. — Special Correspondent

Sports Authority vice-chairman

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has appointed S. Kumaraswamy, a retired Director-General of Police as Vice-Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority and its Executive Committee, according to an official release here on Thursday. Mr. Kumaraswamy, a 1968 batch IPS officer, retired as DGP and Chief Vigilance Officer, State Transport Corporation, Tiruchirappalli, in November 2004. — Special Correspondent

Three run over

VELLORE: Three persons, including a child, were killed and three others injured when they were hit by a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus in front of a hotel inside a new mofussil bus stand here on Wednesday night.

According to police, Kumar (45), driver of the Pernambut-Chennai bus, stopped the vehicle in front of the hotel to enable Vellore-bound passengers to alight. He then went to a toilet. At this time, T. Ramaraj (29) of Tirumani village near Katpadi (brother of the conductor) who was travelling in the bus took the wheel without the knowledge of the driver, resulting in the accident.

The deceased were identified as Balu (45), Dhanalakshmi (35) and Sathyakavi (2). Ramaraj has been arrested. — Special Correspondent
