Thiruvananthapuram: A 65-year-old tribal was seriously injured after a bear attacked him inside the Neyyar Wild Life Reserve on Thursday evening. The police identified the injured person as Ichukutti Kanikkaran, a resident of Thedumala in Thenmala forest settlement. The bear attacked Ichukutti Kani around 4 p.m. when he was collecting fallen jackfruits deep inside the forest. The police were yet to confirm whether the attack was by a pack or a lone bear. Fellow tribal people transported Ichukutti on a makeshift stretcher to Mayam. The journey through the forest took more than two hours of arduous trekking. From Mayam, Ichukutti was rushed to the Medical College Hospital in a vehicle arranged by local people. The Medical College hospital authorities said Ichukutti had arrived at the hospital in a badly mauled condition. The muscles on his arm were ripped off and his face was a mask of shredded flesh and blood. The police said Ichukutti lived in a small hut in an isolated area on the border of the tribal settlement. The family collected forest produce and cultivated yams and bananas for a living.
