Quraishi is new Election Commissioner

S.Y. Quraishi
New Delhi:
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Thursday appointed S.Y. Quraishi, Secretary in the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, as Election Commissioner for a five-year term. He fills a vacancy in the Election Commission caused by the superannuation of Chief Election Commissioner B.B. Tandon.
N. Gopalaswami will take over as the CEC on Friday. The other Commissioner is Naveen Chawla.
Mr. Quraishi, a 1971-batch IAS officer, has held several key positions including as Special Secretary in the Health Ministry, Director-General of the National AIDS Control Organisation, and Director-General, Doordarshan. He has also served as Director-General of the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan. He founded the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and was its Director between 1993 and 1997.
