Rajahmundry: `Sri Vari' cultivation, introduced by the East Godavari district administration in view of the declining rainfall, is giving good results to the farming community in Godavari Delta area by way of less investment and more production.

During this kharif, the Agriculture Department has decided to take up `Sri Vari' cultivation in one acre in every village. According to Joint Director, Agriculture, Venkatanarayana, `Sri Vari' cultivation involves less quantity of seed, less usage of pesticides and encourages use of bio-fertilizers.

The department has set a target of growing seedlings in 5.34 lakh acres in the district and farmers in Rajahmundry division, led bySomayajulu and his team, have been directed to develop 50 per cent of seedlings. Central and Eastern Delta farmers have developed only 20 to 30 per cent of seedlings.

Vermi-compost

On vermi-composts, Mr. Venkatanarayana says that each mandal will get 20 vermi-compost units with 75 per cent subsidy and each unit will cost some Rs.6,500.
