SHIMLA: The Bharatiya Janata Party has won the Panchayat Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections in the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti after favourable results in neighbouring Kinnaur. According to BJP State unit president Suresh Bhardwaj, the party has won the Chairman and Vice-Chairman's seats despite best efforts by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, who was camping there for several days. Pushpa Devi has been elected the Chairperson and BJP district secretary Ringzin has been elected the Vice-Chairman. Asha Kumari has been elected the Chairperson and Gyan the Vice-Chairman of the Block Samiti. The BJP leader alleged that the Chief Minister tried to stall the election process but the district administration had to conduct it and the Congress lost the elections. The Chief Minister in his desperate bid made several alluring announcements concerning development and single-line administration in the tribal district but in vain. "He even distributed old-age and widow pensions flouting the election code of conduct but even that did not work," claimed the BJP.
