KSEB devises scheme to curb power theft

Special Correspondent

No action against those who make voluntary disclosure, says Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Electricity Board has approved a scheme for exempting those who make voluntary disclosure of power theft and misuse of power from criminal action.

They should inform the Inspector General, Vigilance and Security or the Deputy Chief Engineers or Executive Engineers concerned about it over telephone or in the prescribed format.

The Board will then give a bill inclusive of fine under the Electricity Act of 2003 to them. No criminal action will be taken against those who pay the bill within seven days.

After seven days, the power connection will be snapped. Such persons will have to pay the interest as per law along with the bill amount.

The names of those who make voluntary disclosures will be kept confidential.

The Board has also extended the period of the one time settlement scheme for defaulters of power tariff till September 30. The surcharge normally collected from the defaulters is 24 per cent.

But those who remit the arrears in one instalment will have to pay a surcharge of only 12 per cent.
