Khammam
Staff Reporter
KHAMMAM: Secretary of the CPI K. Narayana has said that the TDP has never shown any commitment to devolution of powers to the local bodies. Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, Mr. Narayana said though the Left parties championed the cause of powers for the local bodies, the TDP could not fulfil them. He wondered as to what forced the CPI(M) into an alliance with the TDP for the polls. The CPI made efforts to work together with the CPI(M) in spite of differences in certain areas. But the CPI(M) switched over to the Telugu Desam for the sake of Khammam and Nalgonds Zilla Parishads as the Congress turned down its demand, he said. The CPI, however, wanted to continue its friendship with the Congress. It was because the party considered its policies to be more important than the number of ZPTC and MPTC seats offered to it under the poll pact, he added.
BJP leader's plea
Hyderabad Special Correspondent writes: Meanwhile, former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Ch.Vidyasagar Rao has urged the Government to ensure that the second phase of the panchayat elections are held in a fair and violence-free atmosphere on July 2. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said that democracy had been ridiculed during the first phase and free flow of money, liquor and abuse of power were witnessed at every stage. People were wondering whether there was an Election Commission or not. Stating that the State Election Commission had become "weak", he alleged that no action was taken against the leaders of the ruling party for violating the poll code, while cases were booked against their rivals. Congress MLAs and leaders want to win the elections at any cost.
