How to spare a shock

With a view to avoid fire mishaps due to power leakage, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials in Tiruchi organised a special programme to sensitise private electricians and electrical contractors on the various preventive measures at a workshop on electrical safety in the city recently. Useful tips on various precautionary measures to be taken by electricians were given on the occasion by engineers, based on their past experience.

They appealed to the electricians to ensure additional circuits for the future power needs in house wiring. In most cases, expansion or installation of additional high-energy consuming units such as air-conditioners or refrigerators often resulted in over-drawing of power resulting in leakage.

A little care on the strength of the wiring should be taken before installing an A/c set. Simultaneously, the electrical stability from the poles should also be carefully ascertained.

"A little care can keep the electrical short-circuit away", the Executive Engineer, TNEB. P. Rajmohan, said. The inclusion of the `Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker" (ELCB) would go a long way in preventing the leakage, both in anticipated and unforeseen circumstances.

He said electricians setting up temporary services at the construction sites should utilise highly insulated wire, so that masons and other construction workers would be spared of any shock. On the concealed wiring, he said quality and sufficiently larger PVC pipes providing aeration all around the circuit would eliminate any fire mishap owing to friction or warmth.

The Assistant Executive Engineers, Raghunath, Rajendran and Sekar, and Lakshmanan, also spoke.
