Tiruchi's load factor

The problems faced by construction firms are far from over. If anything, the difficulties faced by them in procuring sand has only spilled over to the public in the wake of water release into the Cauvery from the Mettur Dam.

The demand for sand reflects in the hindrance caused to the flow of regular traffic by the serpentine queue of lorries stationed by the side of the Chennai Bypass Road near the Coleroon in Tiruchi. These lorries wait for their turn to procure sand supplied through sand depots maintained by the Public Works Department. There have been instances of lorries waiting for two days for obtaining a load, say the drivers.

There is another danger. The clogging traffic causes enormous pressure on the bridge providing for two-way traffic across the Coleroon. There is an apprehension that the bridge, which got weakened in the aftermath of last year floods, is not strong enough to bear the weight of the array of vehicles along its entire stretch.

From R. Krishnamoorthy in Tiruchi
