Polavaram spells doom for Khammam, says Raghavulu

Staff Reporter

  • Over 300 villages will be submerged under the project
  • Rehabilitation of displaced in the plains adds to the chaos
  • LI schemes aimed at diverting Godavari water to Krishna basin

WYRA (Khammam dt.): State secretary of the CPI(M) B.V. Raghavulu has said that Khammam district will pay a heavy price for the ill-advised policies of the Government.

Addressing roadside meetings as part of his campaign on Thursday, he said that over 300 villages would be submerged under the Polavaram project. Even if experts were keen on lowering the height of the project to minimise displacement, the Government was not in a position to heed to them, he observed.

Rehabilitation of the displaced in the plains would add to the density of population resulting in more pressure on the existing infrastructure.

He said that Dummugudem lift schemes promised in the district were aimed at diverting the Godavari water to Krishna basin.

Mr. Raghavulu alleged large-scale deployment of police forces in the district for the local body polls. It was intended to thwart the challenge of the CPI(M)-TDP combine which would win the Zilla Parishad.
