Elephants will be cared for, Raje tells NGO

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, now on a 15-day tour of Britain and the U.S., has held out an assurance that the State Government will take proper care of elephants at the proposed "Haathi Gaon'' in Amber, near here, by ensuring natural habitat for elephants and training their owners.

#Ms. Raje, participating in a charity programme organised by `Elephant Family', a non-Government organisation working for welfare of Asian elephants, in London on Tuesday, said several steps had been taken for well-being of pachyderms in the State and their health and security was given high priority.

#Ms. Raje was the guest of Prince Charles and his wife Camila, Duchess of Cornwall, in London. An official release issued here quoted Ms. Raje as telling the gathering that an Elephant Welfare Society had been established in Amber and elephant ride for tourists to the historic fort divided into two shifts.

#The Chief Minister said a special cell had been allotted to the doctors of "Help in Suffering'' for treatment of elephants. A water cooler donated by Elephant Family has also been installed in one of the chambers.

#Elephant Family is a group of people, each member of which takes personal care of one Asian elephant. The NGO is run by a board of trustees and is advised by an international consultants' group.

#Ms. Raje left for the U.S. on Thursday to attend a conference of the Rajasthan Association of North Americans (RANA). She will also attend presentations on the Rajasthan Education Initiative and on girl child's development at the Espan Institute in Washington.
