Rs. 1 lakh ex-gratia for constable's kin

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday announced an ex-gratia of Rs. one lakh to the next of kin of Annamalai, a head constable who was killed by a speeding truck in Periyapalayam.

A press release said Mr. Karunanidhi, who condoled Mr. Annamalai's death, ordered officials to consider granting a government job to a family member on compassionate grounds. Director-General of Police, D. Mukherjee, has clarified that the constable was not checking illicit sand-laden lorries when the accident occurred. It was also incorrect to say that the lorry involved in the accident was carrying illicit sand.

In a statement, he said Annamalai of the Periyapalayam police station was assigned the night beat of checking movement of property crime offenders when he was hit by a metallic angle protruding from a lorry as it negotiated a sharp turn. Efforts were under way to trace the lorry. All lorries, including sand-laden ones, passing through Periyapalayam were being subjected to a thorough check.
