Complaint of assault against doctor

Staff Correspondent

`Mediapersons entered trauma care unit of the Kasturba Hospital without permission'

Manipal: Kiran Acharya, son of Medical Education Minister and District in-charge Minister V.S. Acharya, reportedly assaulted a press photographer and a cameraman of a local television channel, at the Kasturba Hospital here on Thursday.

A complaint was filed at the Manipal Police Station on Thursday by Umesh Marpally, photographer of a local newspaper. Mr. Umesh Marpally said he had gone to Kasturba Hospital in the afternoon along with Shijith, a cameraman of a local television channel, to photograph a person who was injured in a house collapse. The photographer said that Dr. Kiran Acharya (who works at the Kasturba Hospital) caught hold of his collar, abused and assaulted him. The doctor allegedly snatched the camera from Umesh Marpally and damaged the equipment of Shijith. Umesh Marpally and Shijith have been admitted to the District Government Hospital.

Dr. Kiran Acharya has filed a complaint with the Manipal Police alleging that the mediapersons entered the hospital without permission, obstructed his duty and threatened him. In a release here, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital D.P. Saraswat said two "unauthorised persons" had entered the Trauma Care Centre and tried to take photographs of an accident victim without permission.
