CHENNAI:
Food Minister E. V. Velu announced on Thursday that strict action would be taken against employees of fair price shops who insist that consumers buy tea powder and soap along with rice.
Consumers who were asked to buy tea powder and soap can send in written complaints to the Collector or the Commissioner of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, Mr. Velu said in a release on Thursday.
Of the stocks in fair price shops, rice from Andhra Pradesh was whiter than Chattisgarh rice, the Minister said.
He said that he would approach the Food Corporation of India, which supplies the rice to the State, with a request to send only stock from Andhra Pradesh.
Co-operation Minister Ko. Si. Mani conducted checks on a few fair price shops in the city on Thursday.
He ordered the temporary suspension of two employees -- C. Srinivasalu and S. Murugesan -- of a fair price shop in Mylapore where he found excess cash balance on hand.
Mr. Mani also checked the weights, balances, bill books and accounts books of shops on Cemetery Road, East Muthaiah Street and Parthasarathy Street in North Chennai.
