Bangalore: The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council on Thursday passed a resolution stating that the existing licences for hoardings would be renewed under the framework of new bylaws. Licences of all hoardings will run out on June 30. The new bylaws will come into effect on July 1. However, the new bylaws are yet to be approved by the Government. The resolution said that unauthorised hoardings would be removed forthwith while steps would be taken to get the stay orders vacated on hoardings under dispute in courts. A few corporators said the audit department of the BMP had found discrepancy of over Rs. 7 crore while about Rs. 5 crore were to be recovered from hoarding owners. The resolution has been based on the recommendations of the committee headed by Mayor, Deputy Mayor and several corporators, which looked at the question of having hoardings in the city. The committee in its report stated that the revenue earned by the BMP through hoardings was more than Rs. 5 crore. Since banning hoardings would result in substantial loss of income, the committee recommended that a set of guidelines be framed for regulating display of hoardings.
