Thiruvananthapuram: The Environment Protection Committee, Sreenivasapuram, has stated that the site for setting up a garbage plant in Varkala municipality was selected by the municipal authorities without carrying out any scientific studies. In a statement here on Wednesday, the committee said the proposed site is close to Kanvashramom, which is considered the `lungs of Varkala.' Besides the lush greenery and springs, the locality has the highest oxygen content in the air in the entire State. The studies conducted by Regional Cancer Centre had proved high oxygen content in the air. Half-a-dozen educational institutions a college are close to the proposed site for the plant. The panel said it was not against the garbage plant but the site chosen to set it up.
