Thiruvananthapuram: After reflector jackets, night batons and fluorescent gloves to regulate traffic, the police personnel in the city traffic wing have been given hands-free walkie-talkies.

Traffic police personnel manning busy junctions in the capital have already started using the hands-free walkie-talkies. Headphone sets equipped with mikes fitted to walkie-talkies enable the traffic personnel manning busy junctions to communicate with the traffic control, their superiors and at the same time to regulate vehicular traffic.

Of the 120 busy traffic junctions in the capital that are manned by traffic police personnel, the hands-free walkie-talkies had been provided at 30 points now.

A senior traffic police official said the hands-free walkie-talkies had been provided on an experimental basis and the feedback from the personnel had been encouraging.

At present, the authorities have provided the hands-free walkie-talkies in points where only one police personnel are posted for duty during the morning and evening shifts. The main idea is to ensure that the traffic police personnel can communicate through the walkie-talkie without skipping the primary job of regulating traffic. This will also avoid traffic snarls and help the personnel to follow the traffic movement.

Moreover, the personnel on duty can immediately alert the traffic control about the erring motorists. Based on the feedback, the authorities plan to introduce such walkie-talkies to personnel posted in other busy junctions.
