Container wagons flagged off

TIRUCHI : The 23rd rake containing 45 container flat wagons, meant for the Container Corporation of India, was flagged off from the Goldenrock Railway Workshop here by the Chief Workshop Engineer, Southern Railway, R.P. Misra on Thursday.

The Chief Workshop Manager, Goldenrock Workshop, S. Rangarajan and other officers and staff were present.

A release from the workshop issued here said the workshop was in receipt of another order of Rs. 270 crore for the manufacture of 1,125 wagons for the CONCOR.

In view of the continuous orders from the CONCOR, the workshop was planning to increase its production capacity from 600 wagons to 1,000 wagons per annum. Additional infrastructure and modern techniques were now being used to cater to the increase in production.

Jewellery looted

Gold jewellery weighing 20 sovereigns was reported stolen from the house of Kannagi at Sunaipuganallur near Vathalai in the district on Tuesday night. The matter was reported to the police on Thursday.

According to the police, Kannagi and her relatives were fast asleep in their house keeping the door open. They woke up to find jewellery missing from the almirah.

Based on a complaint from Kannagi, the Vathalai police have registered a case.

Power bill payment

The electricity bill due for payment on or before July 15 will be the same as the one reckoned for the previous period remitted before May 15 for consumers of Koothappar Road, D-Nagar, Thendral Nagar and Keezha Murukkoor falling under the Tiruverumbur unit office of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.

A release issued by the TNEB here on Thursday said arrangement had been made in the wake of the non-assessment of the power consumption for administrative reasons in the areas.

The release appealed to the consumers to remit the bill on or before July 15 to avoid disconnection of service.

``Ban child labour in hotel industry''

The Tiruchi-Thanjavur District Hotel and General Workers Union urged the Government to take steps to ban employment of children below 14 years in the hotel industry. A resolution was adopted at a meeting of the union held here on Tuesday.

Another resolution called upon hotel managements to provide the basic pay sanctioned by the Government to their workers. By other resolutions, the meeting pleaded for ESI and PF facilities to the hotel workers, regularisation of the services of the workers who had put in six months of service, closure of hotels on government holidays and festival days and double wages to those employed on holidays.

The president of the association, M. Kathiresan, presided over the meeting.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 104.13 feet Thursday. The inflow was 5,813 cusecs and the outflow 13,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
