MCD junior engineer, "tout" arrested

NEW DELHI: A junior engineer with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and a "tout" have been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the State Government for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe from a person for not demolishing his "illegally" constructed house.

The Anti-Corruption Branch received a complaint from Sudhir Rana, a resident of Main Chowk in Burari, alleging that some MCD officials were demanding Rs.1 lakh from him for not demolishing his house. They contacted him through a tout, Rajesh Kumar. On June 26, the MCD had partially demolished his house.

Acting on the complaint, the Anti-Corruption Branch sleuths laid a trap and allegedly caught Rajesh and MCD junior engineer red-handed while accepting the first instalment of Rs.20,000 at the Shakarpur office of the Civil Line Zone on Wednesday.

National level

athlete shot at

NEW DELHI: A national level athlete was shot in the hand allegedly by his two neighbours at Lado Sarai in South Delhi on Thursday. One of the accused has been arrested.

According to the police, the incident took place around 12-30 p.m. when Manish and Joginder allegedly demanded money from Ashok Sejwal, a 400-metre distance runner, to buy drugs. Ashok, who was then at his uncle's shop, refused to give them money at which they opened fire at him.

Ashok sustained injuries in his hand and was taken to AIIMS from where he was discharged after treatment. Later, the police arrested Joginder. A hunt for Manish is on.

Brain suite at Saket Max Hospital

NEW DELHI: The Neurosurgery Department of Max Super Speciality Hospital at Saket here has equipped itself with Asia's first brain suite that has a magnetic resonance (MR) image analysis tool designed to help neurosurgeons get real-time images during removal of tumour.

Journalist dead

NEW DELHI: Veteran journalist and rationalist leader Joseph Edamaruku passed away in his sleep on Thursday. He was 73.

As per his wishes his eyes were donated and his body was handed over to the Anatomy Department of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences for the use of medical science.

Mr. Edamaruku had been living in Delhi since 1977 and represented Kerala Sabdam group of newspapers as its Bureau Chief. He authored 173 books and actively campaigned against superstitions and blind beliefs.

Mr. Edamaruku was president of the Indian Rationalist Association from 1995 to 2005.

He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

Award for NTPC

NEW DELHI: NTPC Limited has been conferred the prestigious Golden Peacock Environment Management Award of the World Environment Foundation for this year in the corporate category for significant changes made in the areas of environment management.

The award was presented by Himachal Chief Minister Vir Bhadra Singh to NTPC Director (Technical) R.K. Jain during the eighth World Congress on Environment Management at Palampur in Himachal Pradesh recently.
