`Dead man' arrested after four years

Staff Reporter

He allegedly faked his murder

NEW DELHI: A 44-year-old man who allegedly faked his murder in 2002 to evade the Uttar Pradesh police has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. A criminal who was arrested on charges of his murder is still in judicial custody.

The accused, Abdul Salam, was arrested at R.K. Puram in South-West Delhi after a country-made firearm was recovered from his possession. During interrogation, he revealed that in 2002 he murdered his accomplice and set his body afire to fake his death in the police records. Salam was arrested by the Loni police for the first time under the Arms Act in January 2000.

In Dasna Jail, he came across one Zakir of Aligarh who was involved in an attempt-to-murder case. The two decided to form a gang and commit robberies. After he came out on bail, Salam made arrangements for Zakir's bail on a bogus surety, after which the two committed several robberies.

But in December 2002, their relationship turned sour as Zakir did not return the money he had borrowed from Salam and threatened to inform the police about his activities. Salam then allegedly planned to eliminate Zakir and accordingly faked his own death.

On December 20, 2002, Salam invited Zakir for a drinking session in Ghaziabad. After consuming liquor, Salam asked Zakir to take him to his Aligarh residence.

Accordingly, they hired an auto-rickshaw. On the way, they stopped to drink water from a hand-pump and there Salam allegedly hit Zakir on the head with the handle of the hand-pump.

He then allegedly poured petrol on his body and set it afire. Salem left his sleepers and personal diary at the spot to give his identify to the deceased.
