Bangalore: A first of its kind conference to share the various e-governance models implemented in different government departments was launched here on Friday. A conference of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) brought together Chief Information Officers from government departments.

Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda, who inaugurated the function, said the State Government aimed at promoting innovation and scientific temperament not only in well-known institutions but also in rural areas.

"We plan to create a databank of innovations by rural farmers and post it on the website," he said.

For e-governance to be effective, people had to become computer-savvy.

"We should make sure that e-governance is accepted and utilised by people from the lowest strata of society," he said.

"Some of the models talked about here can be used in other departments where e-governance has not taken off. That way one does not have to start from the scratch to create an e-governance model for a particular department," T. Radhakrishna, editor of Good Governance, a magazine, told The Hindu .

M.N. Vidyashankar, Secretary to the Government, Department of Medical Education, said such conferences would be conducted once in six months both in New Delhi and Bangalore.
