Police collecting suggestions from the public

Kozhikode: The city police have decided to collect suggestions from the public as part of efforts to improve the community policing scheme. Residents can now submit their suggestions and feedbacks to officials at the computer centre at the office of the Commissioner of Police before July 15.

City Police Commissioner H. Venkatesh said that currently, women constables were visiting housing colonies and residential areas in the city and the suburbs. Apart from matters related to policing, they were taking the initiative in solving family disputes and offering counselling to women to cope with domestic problems, he added.

"However the existing scheme, Kudumba Suraksha Padhati, has been designed for a specific purpose. Now, we are in the process of expanding the scheme incorporating other jobs," Mr. Venkatesh said.

Developed nations have successfully implemented the concept of the friendly neighbourhood policeman.

Today, the police are making a conscious effort not only to bolster their image but also better their relationship with the public.

Women constables have been selected for the existing scheme based on their educational qualification and general conduct. Specific localities are entrusted to two women constables each in connection with the scheme.

With the help of these constables, the city police have chalked out interactions with the residents' associations. A few meetings, attended by senior officers, have been held since the scheme was launched in November, Mr. Venkatesh said.

As part of the community policing, the city police is also taking up issues concerning the public, particularly those related to environment. Last week, the city police held a seminar highlighting the need to conserve the ecosystem. An essay contest on "Environment problems and solutions" for high school and college students was conducted on the occasion.

Further, the police have decided to cooperate with other departments to start an awareness campaign on the need to protect the environment.

It will also associate with the Calicut University Education Multimedia Research Centre in bringing out a compact disc in this regard.

M.N. Krishnamurthy, Inspector-General of Police, North Zone, has asked Mr. Venkatesh to prepare a report on the need for a comprehensive legislation on conserving nature and public issues.

The report will be submitted to the State Government, incorporating the suggestions of the residents.
