ZP members praise sericulture officials

Silk market sought in Bidar district

Bidar: The Bidar Zilla Panchayat members were equivocal in praising the officials of the Sericulture Department in Bidar on Wednesday.

At the general body meeting, Sericulture Department officials said Bidar stood second behind Belguam in the production of cocoons in north Karnataka. This achievement was more significant considering that there was not a single irrigation project in the district. Credit flow to the sector increased by 100 per cent in three years. Over 300 farmers in 91 villages had taken to sericulture. Assistant Director G. Ganapati said the Government was considering providing 100 per cent subsidy to drip irrigation in sericulture. Members of all parties congratulated the performance of the department in the district. Abdul Sattar of the Congress praised the officials and said he had seen them visit remote villages trying to encourage farmers to take up sericulture. Members cutting across party lines resolved to urge the State Government to set up a market for silk in the district or in Gulbarga district. Deputy Director B.B. Malakannanavar was present.
