LTTE's regret

The editorial "What Balasingham should understand" (June 29) was like the thrust of a sharp rapier into the LTTE's `regret' of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. It drove home the hollowness of Anton Balasingham's comments lest they should be mistaken for confession or apology, and exposed them for what they are worth — nothing. What is the LTTE willing to give up in return for India's magnanimity? Violence, which the whole world disapproves of and is determined to disallow? Are V. Prabakaran and company ready to face trial for the crimes they have committed in the name of a cause?

R. Vasudevan,
Chennai

It does not matter what Mr. Balasingham means. It is evident that Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by the LTTE. If India has to get involved in the Sri Lankan peace process, it should only be on the condition that the LTTE leave the interests of the Tamils to it.

India should not be moved by the Tigers' crocodile tears. The Tamil Nadu Government should be particularly cautious. As long as the LTTE continues to indulge in human bomb attacks, there can be no question of finding a solution to the ethnic problem.

M.N. Srinivasan,
Vellore, T.N.
