RBI enters semifinals

TIRUNELVELI: Defending champion Reserve Bank of India, Chennai, defeated Food Corporation of India, Chennai, 2-0 to enter the semifinals of the sixth Kandasamy memorial trophy State-level invitation hockey tournament here on Friday.

Three good saves by goalkeeper Peter in the tie-breaker helped Indian Bank, Chennai, defeat SAI Sports Hostel, Chennai, 4-2 in a tie-breaker after the teams were level 1-1 at regulation time.

Others to make the last-four grade were Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai, which defeated AG Friends Club, Chennai, 5-1 and Central Excise, Chennai, which won over host Jothi Sports Club 3-1.

Results (quarterfinals): Reserve Bank of India 2 (Mani, Yovan) bt FCI (Chennai) 0; IOB (Chennai) 5 (Muthuselvan 2, Uchi Mahali, Gopinath, Singaravel) bt AG Friends Club (Chennai) 1 (Sudalai); Indian Bank 4 (Dinesh Nayak, Raja, Sudarsan, Alfred) bt SAI Sports Hostel (Chennai) 2 (Sivabalan, Aswin) in tie-breakerer (full time 1-1); Central Excise (Chennai) 3 bt Jothi Sports Club 1.
