Crop failure: farmer commits suicide in Gujarat
Special Correspondent
AHMEDABAD:
A groundnut grower in Sarpadar village in Padhari taluka of Rajkot district in the Saurashtra region committed suicide reportedly due to crop failure.
Ramesh Mungalpara (44) hung himself from a tree behind his house.
His family members said the prolonged dry spell and the subsequent crop failure had ruined him financially. He had purchased groundnut seeds at a high cost and sown them after the first spell of rain early this month. The seeds, however, failed to germinate as there was no more rain.
Most parts of the State, including the Kutch-Saurashtra region, are passing through a dry spell, belying forecasts of an early and normal monsoon. Some parts of Saurashtra and south Gujarat received some rainfall earlier this week.
