Congress faults TDP diatribe against SEC

`Charges levelled by TDP against A.V.S. Reddy not in good taste'

HYDERABAD: The Congress Legislature Party has criticised the TDP for its tirade against the State Election Commission on the conduct of the local body elections.

The charges being levelled by the TDP against State Election Commissioner A.V.S. Reddy, in particular, were not in good taste. "Does the TDP want to nominate an officer of its choice as SEC or is it against the democratic processes like elections?" Finance and Health Minister K. Rosaiah asked.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Rosaiah termed the remarks made by TDP leaders, including party president N. Chandrababu Naidu, against the election authorities "uncivilised" and "undemocratic." "Is the TDP viewing the conduct of elections in a unbiased manner as a failure of the SEC?" he questioned.

Citing the incidents at Markapur where TDP leaders and cadre damaged buses and shops demanding release of one of their leaders, he wanted the main opposition party to clarify its stand on the issue.

The TDP had become desperate ever since it lost power in the previous elections and the party leaders were resorting to "irresponsible talk". TDP should stop its criticism of the Government at least now and cooperate in the peaceful conduct of the second phase of the elections.

CPI flays TDP

The CPI objected to the TDP's demand asking SEC to resign. Party secretary K. Narayana in a statement issued here said the demand was made with ulterior motives. The TDP was resorting to pressure tactics to force the commission to accept its charges.

Instead of resorting to mudslinging, the TDP leaders should allow the Commission to function without any bias and effectively. The main Opposition party was hell bent on maligning the SEC only to bring down its image. He advised the TDP to restrain itself from dragging the Commission into any controversy.
