CHENNAI: The German Consulate, which initially denied a visa to former India football skipper I.M. Vijayan, reconsidered its decision and issued him a visa to Germany to watch the semifinal and final matches of World Cup 2006. A `lack of adequate bank balance' was mentioned as the reason for the earlier denial and a distraught Vijayan said he thought that his sponsored trip, courtesy Philips' agents in Kerala, had fallen through. However, the intervention of the AIFF vice-president C.R. Visswanathan and the helpful attitude of the Consul General, Heinz Kop, turned things in Vijayan's favour. Vijayan had made a similar sponsored trip for the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan. Special Correspondent
