Competition for medals becomes intense

Tehran: The competition for medals became more intense at the Asian Youth chess championships with leaders in the older age groups losing in the eighth and penultimate round.

But it was a good day for the leaders in the younger age categories as they consolidated their positions at the top.

Aditya Vikas, who was having an excellent tournament so far, lost to Shahin Koohestani of Iran in the boys' under-14 championship and shared the lead with Shahin and compatriot S. Nitin, who defeated Amirreza Pourramezanali of Iran. The three have six points to their credit.

The three leaders have already played against each other and the last round is guaranteed to produce an exciting fare as all of them will be keen to win their games and bag the gold medal.

In the girls' under-14 competition, top-seeded Indian Bhakti Kulkarni snatched the lead from Iranian Mitra Hejazipour by defeating her in the eighth round. With six points to her credit, Mitra shares second spot with compatriot Pon Kruttika who defeated Pallabi Roy.

Boys' under-14: Aditya Vikas (6) lost to Shanin Koohestani (6, Irn): Amirreza Pourramezanali (5, Irn) lost to S. Nitin (6); Mars Ulu Dan (5.5, Kyg) drew with Amir Azemati (5.0, Irn); Y. Sandeep (4.5) lost to B. Adhiban (5.5).

Under-12: Prasanna Rao (6.5) lost to Ch. Mehar Chinna Reddy (6); Vidit Gujarathi (7) bt Pouya Idani (5, Irn); Vishwanath Prasad (5.5) bt Mehdi Hosseinipour (5, Irn); Amirreza Alizadehnikoo (4.5, Irn) lost to V.A.V. Rajesh (5.5).
