Tokyo: A superb final-hole birdie kept Jeev Milkha Singh's hopes alive while compatriot Amandeep Johl failed to make the cut at the end of the second round of the UBS Japan golf tour championship here on Friday. Jeev, the current leader of the Asian Tour's UBS Order of Merit, returned a hard-earned round of two-over 72 for an aggregate of 142 and a tie for 19th place, while Johl, playing on a sponsor's invitation this week, was not so fortunate. A second-round 77 saw him finish at nine-over par 149, missing the cut by three strokes. Toru Taniguchi, whose four-under 66 followed an equally impressive 67 on Thursday, leads at seven-under 133. Four players are tied for second four shots behind at the $ 1.3 million tournament, including evergreen 51-year-old Tommy Nakajima.
Atwal fails
Meanwhile, Arjun Atwal failed to get a single birdie as he carded a disappointing two-over 72 to be tied for the 101st spot after the opening round of the $4,400,000 Buick championship in Connecticut. The Orlando-based Indian once again found himself struggling for form as he stumbled twice in his otherwise ordinary performance. Atwal, who failed to make the cut in last week's Booz Allen Classic, will again find it hard to stay in contention and would have to raise his game by several notches to prevent another drop. UNI
