Press employees hold rally, court arrest

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of Press Unity Day, newspaper employees held a rally and courted arrest on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg here on Friday in support of their charter of demands.

Organised by the Delhi Union of Journalists in coordination with nine newspaper employees' unions, the rally called for "an immediate end to all unfair labour practices and curbs on freedom of association and freedom of the Press''. A delegation later submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit demanding early action on their charter of demands.

Retires after 41 years of service

NEW DELHI: After 41 years of service, Krishan Gopal, working with the Information Section of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), retired on Friday.

Mr. Gopal joined the CBI in 1965 and worked with various senior IPS officers in different branches and sections of the CBI. Officers and staff of the Information Section organised a function in honour of Mr. Gopal at the CBI headquarters on Friday.

Temple Mahotsavam

NEW DELHI: The Ayappa Mandir in neighbouring Gurgaon will celebrate its "Prathishta Dina Mahotsavam'' by organising a four-day function at the temple premises beginning this Sunday. "Poojas'' and cultural programmes have been planned on all four days.

On Sunday, "Laksharchana'' will be performed by priests from Kerala headed by the temple thantri Brahmashri Puthumana Sreedharan Nampoothiri. There will be a Kathakali performance by artistes of the International Kathakali Centre on Sunday.

Book released

NEW DELHI: Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar and Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy jointly released M. Guruswamy's book, "India: Issues in Development'', at India International Centre here earlier this week.

The release was followed by a discussion on "Growing Regional Imbalances and Over-Centralisation of Government''. The book has been published by Hope India Publications on behalf of the Centre for Policy Alternatives.

Appeal to Sikhs

NEW DELHI: Shiromani Gurdwara Sewadar Committee vice-president S. Darshan Singh has appealed to the Sikh community to celebrate the fourth centenary of the establishment of Akal Takht on Sunday with "religious fervour and dignity''.

He urged the Akali factions to unite under the banner of Akal Takht and work for the progress of the community and the country.
